Coaching Youth Soccer: A Baffled Parents Guide

Written by soccer great and championship Stanford coach Bobby Clark, COACHING YOUTH SOCCER: THE BAFFLED PARENTS GUIDE shows how an uninitiated coach can mold a group of kids into a team.

Being part of a team will be one of the most rewarding experiences of their youth.

But in the end, it will be you who reaps the biggest reward, as you watch your players learn and grow.

  • Coaching Youth Soccer helps organize your practices and provides ideas for drills that will keep your team interested throughout the entire season.
  • You’ll soon be getting compliments from parents because their kids enjoy the variety of “games”  they play in practice so much.
  • Coaching Youth Soccer gets you reflecting on the sense of responsility and achievement that building a team brings.

Soccer Exercises – Let’s Begin With Fitness!

Association football is a complex game and consequently, there are a number of elements that you have to bear in mind when designing and applying soccer exercises and training programmes.

A further complication is that different methods and approaches are required at different ages – if you coach kids or teenagers, you will be well aware that your players are developing both psychologically and physically, and a technique that is effective for a senior can sometimes be damaging if applied to a youngster.

The key to successful performance in any sport is fitness, and in the case of soccer, exercises can be divided into three broad categories:

  • Endurance
  • Strength
  • Flexibility.

Football is a Ninety-Minute Game

Soccer Ball ClockAerobic exercises that strengthen the cardiovascular system increase the heart rate, speed up breathing and raise body temperature. For this reason, jogging is an excellent choice as a warm-up activity in any soccer training programme.

However, players should also be encouraged to do other stamina-increasing sports, such as swimming, horseriding or even yoga.

Another characteristic of soccer is that it involves anaerobic activity, which is when energy is expended in short bursts.

The fast acceleration and sprinting speed required of a soccer player, and can be practiced through short sprint activities or by simply incorporating sprint-trot sections into a team jog.

May The Force Be With You

Anaerobic aspects can also be worked on in the gym or in circuit training.

Working out with weights and step exercises are not only good for improving stamina but are also essential for developing strength.

Soccer is an inevitably physical sport and the stronger your players are, the less likely they are to get hurt – it’s important to work on upper body strength along with specific exercises that focus on the leg strength needed to kick a ball effectively.

Bend It, Shake It

Soccer players need to be as supple as gymnasts at times, not only to beat the opponent but also because one of the best ways to avoid injury is to get out of the way before any damage is done.

Soccer exercises that involve stretching, moving to music or are inspired by yoga should also be part of any integrated training schedule.

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind

Without forgetting the technical importance of ball skills and tactics or the psychology of attitude and motivation, the fact remains that a fit player is likely to be both highly motivated and capable of playing above his or her skill level.

How do i coach 5 and 6 year old youth soccer when it is my first year coaching and I know nothing about soccer

What would really be helpfull is a point in the right direction to finding some good web sites. I would like something for a good guid line as to what I should be teaching these kids at this age. I have coached this age before in wrestling so I am familiar with that part of it. I just need to know what to show them. I can work with them from there.

Good for you! Here is a good start. Go to the website I have listed here and then click on the coaches tab, and follow the links to the U-6 drills.

I too was in your shoes and I have also used this myself and helped me get a grip until more I was more established. This website is all about the kids playing soccer. Also if you can, take a referee course to give you a better feel of the Laws of the Game. This will make you a better coach.

Good Luck!

I’m looking to get a head start on the soccer season, and I want to start training now Any drills you know of?

Any drills or tips you can give me will be helpful

(Freshman going on Sophomore 14 yrs old 135lb 5’6" going out for JV Medium Competitive)

1) you need to get into shape, consider running 3 miles and go further, endurance is crucial!
2) practice dribbling and controling the ball
3) shoot
4) play a game with some friends or even older kids to get better!

Answer this if you know a lot about working out fitness and a little soccer?

Answer this if you know a lot about working out fitness and a little soccer?
Answer this if you know a lot about working out fitness and a little soccer? could you please design me a workout routine that will caters for my needs. i have an hour in the gym everyday day of the week (except weekends) and i have an hour and a half fridays i weigh 115 pounds i’m only 15 years of age and only 5,2 inches tall my body fat is around 15 ,5% . i need this routine to do the following 1. help me get a six pack as soon as possible(i relize i need a body fat percentage of 12% for that) i also do 8 minute abs every night 2. i play soccer and that’s coming up soon so i need to build speed and endurance so i need to be on the running machines at least for the whole of thursday , tuesday workouts AND half hour of fridays work out (if you think that will work) 3. i’m a small guy so i need to build a lot of muscle 4. any exercises or programs that help me get taller 5. build quick, powerful ,agile and
please be specific like monday…………
teusday……………..
and each exercise and reps

You say you are working your abs every night. An important part of working out is recovery. If you don’t let the muscles recover then you will break down. I’m no expert but at 15 you don’t want to overdo it. Overworking your body at such a young age can cause alot of problems later in life. If you are as keen as you sound find yourself a good personal trainer with appropriate quals and have them develop a training schedule for you.
For your endurance go to a field and divide it into 20yd sections. Sprint 20, drop and do 10 pushups, sprint 20 drop and do 10 situps etc. When you reach the end have a slow jog back to the start and go again. This will do alot more than running on a machine. Again think about recovery time. Alternate your exercises so you work a different part of your body each day (e.g. upper body Monday, Legs Tuesday, endurance Wednesday etc.) This gives time for the muscles to recover and build.

Where is the cheapest place I can get Agilty equipment for my dogs?

I’m training my dogs to be show dogs. But the problem is, i don’thave enough money to buy real equipment. My dogs can catch tennis balls in the sky while doing a half flip, jump over really high branches and stick, play soccer, swim, jumprope, and jump through hula hoops! Help!

I would recommend the beginner package that has been mentioned before, it’s not an entire set, or of good quality. But it will do for the time being.

I suggest you enrol in agility classes to ensure that you and your dog are learning how to use the equipment properly to help prevent injury.

What are some good soccer drills my team can do at practice?

If youve been a coach please help us out we just lost 5-1 earlier and i really need to get my team in shape. We will play the same team in a week and a half and i know we can beat them.We had a lot of errors in the defense all of a sudden. We are in 1st place and we cant lose like this. This is a Under 14 1st division soccer team of cali so any drills are good these kids are tough and play really good soccer.I just think that when i switched the formation i kinda screwed it up.So any help would be good.

Thanks!!!!

My team made it in to the finals this year, and I am only 13 so this will be perfect. My coach went hard on us. We practised weaving around 4 markers, that helped us with ball control and learning how to dribble. We practised throw-ins with everyone going their hardest to keep it away. We practised taking corner kicks and that really helped us, we had people on the inside heading the ball into the net and the GK trying to stop them. To help the GK, we did dot-shots and the GK had to defend as well diving for the ball. I forget what it was called but we got three people and the middle person would kick to the right person and the middle go to where the right person was, then the right person would kick to the left person then the right would go to the left person etc. We practised three people trying to score (as I explained just before) and the defenders had to tackle them and the GK had to stop goals. I cannot remember much else. Tell your team to snap into gear and tell them not to give up.

what exercises to soccer players do to get massive quads?

what would be included in a typical workout? how much weight would they be using?

squats and lunges are the most common. Use weights where you can do 2 sets of 6-8 reps and if you are having to choose between 2, go with the smaller one and advance. And, remember, massive quads do not mean massive kick power. To increase kicking power, go through the motion, use resistance bands, and also practice making space for shots. Hope i helped ;)
